Efficient Broadcasting in Ad Hoc Networks Using Directional Antennas

چکیده
Using directional antennas to conserve bandwidth and energy consumption in ad hoc networks is becoming popular in recent years. However, applications of directional antennas for broadcasting have been limited. We propose a novel broadcast protocol called directional self-pruning (DSP) for ad hoc networks using directional antennas. DSP is a non-trivial generalization of an existing localized deterministic broadcast protocol using omnidirectional antennas. Compared with its omnidirectional predecessor, DSP uses about the same number of forward nodes to relay the broadcast packet, while the number of forward directions that each forward node uses in transmission is significantly reduced. With the lower broadcast redundancy, DSP is more bandwidthand energy-efficient. DSP is based on 2-hop neighborhood information and does not rely on location or angle-of-arrival (AoA) information. DSP is a pure localized protocol. We prove that the expected number of forward nodes in DSP is within a constant factor of the minimal value in an optimal solution. Our simulation results show that DSP can reduce the transmission cost by 30%–65%.

Broadcast has been widely used in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) as a communication means to disseminate information to all reachable nodes. However, the conventional broadcast scheme that broadcast packets omni directionally suffers from several drawbacks: excessive amount of redundant traffic, exaggerated interference/contention among neighboring nodes, and limited coverage (as a result of c...
متن کاملOn the delay reduction of wireless ad hoc networks with directional antennas
It is shown that the throughput capacity of wireless ad hoc networks using omni-directional antennas (OMN networks) is significantly decreased with the increased number of nodes. One major reason lies in the interference caused by using omni-directional antennas, which just broadcast radio signal in all directions. Thus, a communication with multiple short-ranged hops is suggested in such netwo...

To improve the throughput performance keeping high reliable broadcasting, we propose an efficient Medium Access Control protocol for broadcasting in wireless ad-hoc networks with IEEE 802.11. In the proposed protocol, to reduce the number of retransmissions, a broadcast packet is retransmitted according to NACK instead of ACK. Moreover, the broadcast packet is retransmitted only to the area inc...
متن کاملAn Adaptive Localized Scheme for Energy-Efficient Broadcasting in Ad Hoc Networks with Directional Antennas
Several solutions for energy-efficient broadcasting, mostly centralized, have been proposed with directional antennas. However, such globalized protocols are not suitable for ad hoc networks, because each node needs a full knowledge of the topology. Recently, a localized algorithm, called DRBOP, using one-to-one communication model has been proposed. It uses RNG graphs, which can be locally com...
